World Cup Lineup Almost Set |
Most of the World Cup qualifying matches are over, as there is one more round of matches in the African region and a few playoff matches left.
Here are the World Cup standing from each region.
Europe
The teams that have automatically qualified for the World Cup from the European region are Italy, Denmark, Germany, Spain, England, Netherlands, Serbia, Switzerland, and Slovakia.
The eight teams that finished second in their group will play in a home and away series of matches where the winner will qualify for the World Cup. Those eight teams are Bosnia-Herzegovina, France, Republic of Ireland, Russia, Portugal, Slovenia, Greece, and Ukraine.
The payoff matches that will be played on November 18th and 20th are:
Republic of Ireland vs. France
Portugal vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina
Greece vs. Ukraine
Russia vs. Slovenia
South America
The teams that have automatically qualified from the South American region are Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina. Uruguay finished fifth in the qualifying group and they will play Costa Rica, who finished fourth in the CONCACAF region, in a home and away series where the winner will advance to the World Cup.
The playoff schedule is:
11/14/2009 Costa Rica vs. Uruguay
11/18/2009 Uruguay vs. Costa Rica
North-Central America & the Caribbean (CONCACAF)
The teams that have automatically qualified from the CONCACAF region are USA, Mexico, and Honduras. The fourth place finisher in the group, Costa Rica, will face Uruguay where the winner of the series will play next summer.
The automatic qualifiers from the CONCACAF zone are the United States, Mexico, and Honduras. Costa Rica finished fourth in the group qualifying and they will face Uruguay (the fifth place team from South America) in a playoff for the right to play next summer.
The playoff schedule is:
11/14/2009 Costa Rica vs. Uruguay
11/18/2009 Uruguay vs. Costa Rica
Asia
The teams that have automatically qualified from Asia are Japan, Australia, South Korea, and North Korea. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain both finished third in their groups and had a home and away playoff to determine which team would face New Zealand for the right to play in the World Cup.

In the first match in Bahrain the two teams played to a 0-0 draw and in the second match in Saudi Arabia the Saudis led 2-1, but Bahrain scored the equalizer in the 90th minute to even the score. Bahrain scored two away goals, which means they earned the right to play New Zealand where the winner would play next summer. The first match between Bahrain and New Zealand was a 0-0 draw played on October 14th and the second match will take place on November 14th in New Zealand. Since no goals were scored in the first match the second match is a do or die match for both teams.
Africa
In the African region there is still one more round of matches, which will take place on November 14th, and the only two teams that have automatically qualified are Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire.
In Group A Cameroon leads with 10 points and Gabon has 9. In the last group match Cameroon hosts Morocco and Gabon faces Togo away. In Group B Tunisia has 11 points and Nigeria has 9 points. In the last group match Nigeria faces Kenya away and Tunisia faces Mozambique away. In Group C Algeria has 13 points and Egypt has 10 points. In the last group match Egypt hosts Algeria and Egypt has to win the match, as a loss or even a draw will mean Algeria will qualify.
Oceana
New Zealand was the winner of the Oceana region. They then had a home and away series against Bahrain, from the Asian region, where the winner will qualify for South Africa. In the first match in Bahrain on October 14th the two teams played to a 0-0 draw and the second match will take place in New Zealand on November 14th where the winner takes all since no goals were scored in the previous match.

World Cup soccer odds – World Cup 2010 futures
Qualifying is well underway and there have been some upsets, yet the usual suspects top the World Cup 2010 future odds lists across the world.
Brazil owns the shortest odds at 5/1, while South American neighbor Argentina sits at 11/2. Spain, the defending European champions, share the top slot with Brazil at 5/1.
Defending champion Italy, which had been a longshot entering the 2006 World Cup, currently sit at 11/1 odds. The team they defeated in the penalty shoot in Germany (France) is now 18/1.

Some fans and bettors ask the question: why would I bet the World Cup now, well in advance of the tournament field being set and without seeing the injury situations and form at that time? The answer is that singling out a longshot now can pay out far better than when the action begins.
Remember Euro 2004 when Greece entered the tournament as 500/1 underdog? Remember how the odds kept falling as they pulled upset after upset? Remember the global shock when the Greeks paraded the European championship trophy around the field?
For example, the Greeks are currently 100/1 while the powerful Dutch are 18/1.
Not all soccer future wagers are good ones and you should limit these bets. However, placing a few strategic future bets can pad your bankroll. Check out the latest World Cup odds by clicking here.
