World Cup Groups
Well, the groups have been announced for the World Cup and for the first time in a few World Cups the USA has a legit chance to make it out of their group. Even though it is not as clear as it has been in the last several World Cups, Group G has been picked by many of the experts as being the dreaded Group of Death.

Here are the groups and some info on them as well as the current FIFA rankings, which should not change much since there are no more qualifying games, only friendlies.

Group A - South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France

France lucked out in this group, as they do not play a top-tier team since South Africa was grouped in the pool of top-tier teams since they are the host. This is still a tough group, as France is ranked 7th, Mexico is ranked 15th, and Uruguay is ranked 19th. South Africa is ranked 86th and even though they will have the home crowd advantage they will be a long shot to make it out of the group.

Group B - Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, Greece

Even though Argentina did not qualify with ease they are still the big gun in this group. Nigeria is ranked 22nd and Greece is very unpredictable and ranked 12th while South Korea is the weakest team, by far, in this group.

Group C - England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia

The USA has a chance to make it out of this group and they play England in their opening game. Slovenia is ranked 33rd and looked good in World Cup qualifying. Angola is the weak team in this group only ranked 94th in the world.

Group D - Germany, Australia, Ghana, Serbia

Germany should win this group, but Serbia is an up and coming team that is ranked 20th and may give them problems. Ghana is ranked 37th in the world and even though Australia is ranked 21st in the world both will have a tough time getting past Germany and Serbia.

Group E - Netherlands, Japan, Cameroon, Denmark

There are some that think this is the group of death, as except Japan (ranked 43rd) all of these teams are ranked in the top 30. Denmark is the lowest ranked out of the 3 at 26th, but they looked great in World Cup qualifying winning their group. You can’t write off Japan, as they are a solid squad that easily qualified for the World Cup. Cameroon is ranked 11th in the world and the highest-ranking team from the African continent.

Group F - Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay, Slovakia

Defending champion Italy is in a group with first time World Cup entry New Zealand and Paraguay and Slovakia. Paraguay and especially Slovakia looked good in qualifying, but this may be the weakest group.

Group G - Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal

Group G is the Group of Death, as it will not be easy for Brazil to make it out. Portugal is ranked 5th in the world and they did not look good in qualifying, but they made it to the semifinals in the last World Cup and they should have a healthy Cristiano Ronaldo, who is one of the best strikers in the world. Ivory Coast is ranked 16th in the world and looked great in qualifying and North Korea may be the best team from the Asian region.

Group H - Spain, Honduras, Chile, Switzerland

This is another not-so strong group, as Spain should not have any problems making it out. Chile was a surprise qualifier from South America even though they did not finish qualifying well. Switzerland is ranked 18th, but that may be high for them and they were lucky that they drew a weak World Cup qualifying group, which they won. Honduras is ranked 38th in the world and finished 3rd in the CONCACAF region qualifying stage behind the USA and Mexico.

World Cup soccer odds – World Cup 2010 futures

Qualifying is well underway and there have been some upsets, yet the usual suspects top the World Cup 2010 future odds lists across the world.

Brazil owns the shortest odds at 5/1, while South American neighbor Argentina sits at 11/2. Spain, the defending European champions, share the top slot with Brazil at 5/1.

Defending champion Italy, which had been a longshot entering the 2006 World Cup, currently sit at 11/1 odds. The team they defeated in the penalty shoot in Germany (France) is now 18/1.

Some fans and bettors ask the question: why would I bet the World Cup now, well in advance of the tournament field being set and without seeing the injury situations and form at that time? The answer is that singling out a longshot now can pay out far better than when the action begins.

Remember Euro 2004 when Greece entered the tournament as 500/1 underdog? Remember how the odds kept falling as they pulled upset after upset? Remember the global shock when the Greeks paraded the European championship trophy around the field?

For example, the Greeks are currently 100/1 while the powerful Dutch are 18/1.

Not all soccer future wagers are good ones and you should limit these bets. However, placing a few strategic future bets can pad your bankroll. Check out the latest World Cup odds by clicking here.
