World Cup Future Odds

A recent World Cup champion and the reigning European champs are co-favorites to win the 2010 event in South Africa.

Spain and Brazil are the favorites to win the World Cup next summer in South Africa both posted at +450. That means wagering $100 on either today would pay out $450 in profit if they lift the trophy next July. (Odds available now at Bet365.com)

Spain is currently the top ranked team in the FIFA rankings and the reigning European Championship winner. They lead their qualifying group by six points.

Spain has a star-studded team with the likes of David Silva, Xavi, and goal scoring wizard Fernando Torres. Spain will be heading to South Africa with a ton of confidence and they have the squad to go all the way.

Even though Brazil has not qualified yet, they lead the South American qualifying group and they have not lost in their last nine qualifying games. With Kaka, Robinho, Daniel Alves, and Julio Cesar in goal, the Brazilians are stacked.

Argentina (+550) also has a star-studded lineup with Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, and Javier Zanetti, but they are only in fourth place in the South America group and they lost their last qualifying game. Still, they should make it to South Africa and they have a good chance to win the World Cup.

England (+700) is running away with their European qualifying group and their offense is solid led by Wayne Rooney. They have been a disappointment in the last couple of World Cups and they look to change that next summer.

Defending champion Italy (+1100) looks like they will qualify, but can the young Italian team make another run? It helps that they have Gianluigi Buffon in goal, but there are concerns on offense and many stars that were on the 2006 championship team will not play next summer.

Germany (+1100) will qualify for the World Cup, as they had one of the easier qualifying groups. The Germans have looked solid in their last few qualifying games, but they have a young squad and some concerns on defense.

Holland (+1200) is flying under the radar, but they are undefeated in their qualifying matches and their offense has been impressive.

France odds to win World Cup 2010 (+2000) have become longshots as the French have not looked impressive in qualifying games. They are currently second in Group 7 with 10 points. The French are not the youngest team anymore and FIFA now has them only ranked at 10th in the world.

A couple of dark horses that look to qualify may be Russia (+2800) and Paraguay (+4000), and even Chile (+10000), who are currently second in the South American qualifying group.

Portugal (+3300) and Ukraine (+10000) made the semifinals in the last World Cup, but each has struggled in European group play and each has to start winning or they will not play in South Africa.

World Cup soccer odds – World Cup 2010 futures

Qualifying is well underway and there have been some upsets, yet the usual suspects top the World Cup 2010 future odds lists across the world.

Brazil owns the shortest odds at 5/1, while South American neighbor Argentina sits at 11/2. Spain, the defending European champions, share the top slot with Brazil at 5/1.

Defending champion Italy, which had been a longshot entering the 2006 World Cup, currently sit at 11/1 odds. The team they defeated in the penalty shoot in Germany (France) is now 18/1.

Some fans and bettors ask the question: why would I bet the World Cup now, well in advance of the tournament field being set and without seeing the injury situations and form at that time? The answer is that singling out a longshot now can pay out far better than when the action begins.

Remember Euro 2004 when Greece entered the tournament as 500/1 underdog? Remember how the odds kept falling as they pulled upset after upset? Remember the global shock when the Greeks paraded the European championship trophy around the field?

For example, the Greeks are currently 100/1 while the powerful Dutch are 18/1.
