World Cup betting returns with UEFA, CONCACAF qualifiers

World Cup betting is in vogue, a full year before the big event as several huge World Cup qualifiers kick off this weekend.

There are quite a few from UEFA (Europe) tomorrow and two from CONCACAF on Sunday. Many of these matches will determine who will be playing next summer in South Africa.

Here are the qualifying games and the World Cup odds for the matches.

UEFA – World Cup odds

Portugal at Albania

Portugal -275 Albania +650 Draw +300 O/U 2.5

Portugal made it to the World Cup semifinals, but they are in jeopardy of not playing next summer if they do not start winning. They are in second place in Group 1, as they trail both Denmark and Hungary by seven points.

Cristiano Ronaldo has to start scoring and Portugal needs to win this away match or they may be watching the World Cup from home.

Denmark at Sweden

Sweden +105 Denmark +235 Draw +215 O/U 2

Sweden is in a similar position as Portugal in Group one with seven points. Denmark leads the group with 13 points and if they can win this tough away match they should qualify for the World Cup.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of the best goal-scorers in the world and he needs to provide some offense for the Swedish side that has played to a 0-0 draw in their last two matches.

Ukraine at Croatia

Croatia -145 Ukraine +350 Draw +240 O/U 2.5

This is a huge match for both teams, as Croatia is second in Group 6 with 10 points and Ukraine is third with seven points. England should win the group with 15 points so the battle will be for second place.

Even though Ukraine has played one less game then Croatia they will be in a huge hole if they lose this match, which Croatia will be in a great position to play in South Africa if they can win in Zagreb tomorrow.

Ireland at Bulgaria

Bulgaria +105 Ireland +230 Draw +220 O/U 2

Italy leads Group 8 with 14 points, but is idle this weekend while Ireland is in second place with 12 points and Bulgaria is in third with seven points.

It’s pretty simple for both teams, as if Bulgaria loses or even plays to a draw their World Cup hopes are dashed and if Ireland wins they will take over the group lead and will be, pretty much, assured a spot next summer.

CONCACAF – World Cup odds

Honduras at USA (No Line)

USA was crushed 3-1 at Costa Rica this last week and now is in second place in the final group with seven points and Honduras is third with 4 points. If the Americans can win the match against Honduras they should qualify for the World Cup.

The real battle may be between Honduras and Mexico. Mexico only trails Honduras by one point. Three teams from CONCACAF will automatically qualify for the World Cup while the fourth place team will play the fifth place team from South America for a WC berth.

Mexico at El Salvador

Mexico -145 El Salvador +340 Draw +240 (no O/U)

El Salvador hosts Mexico on Sunday and the heavily favored Mexicans really need to win that game to keep pace with or vault ahead of Honduras in the group.

World Cup soccer odds – World Cup 2010 futures

Qualifying is well underway and there have been some upsets, yet the usual suspects top the World Cup 2010 future odds lists across the world.

Brazil owns the shortest odds at 5/1, while South American neighbor Argentina sits at 11/2. Spain, the defending European champions, share the top slot with Brazil at 5/1.

Defending champion Italy, which had been a longshot entering the 2006 World Cup, currently sit at 11/1 odds. The team they defeated in the penalty shoot in Germany (France) is now 18/1.

Some fans and bettors ask the question: why would I bet the World Cup now, well in advance of the tournament field being set and without seeing the injury situations and form at that time? The answer is that singling out a longshot now can pay out far better than when the action begins.

Remember Euro 2004 when Greece entered the tournament as 500/1 underdog? Remember how the odds kept falling as they pulled upset after upset? Remember the global shock when the Greeks paraded the European championship trophy around the field?

For example, the Greeks are currently 100/1 while the powerful Dutch are 18/1.

Not all soccer future wagers are good ones and you should limit these bets. However, placing a few strategic future bets can pad your bankroll. Check out the latest World Cup odds by clicking here.
