The only major unresolved issues in what is unlikely to go down as a classic Premiership season are the battles for the also-ran spots, the most notable of which – the tussle for fourth - will be settled today at Upton Park and Highbury. Spurs are currently in pole position and are 4/7 with BetFred to cling on to that final Champions League place which, as we all know by now, will still not guarantee them a crack at the best teams in Europe. However, Martin Jol’s side need to at least match Arsenal’s result if they are to stay where they are and on paper their trip to West Ham isn’t the easiest of assignments. Fortunately though, the Hammers (7/2, VCbet) have picked up a few injuries and will have one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup final, so the clash looks a little more straightforward than perhaps it would have done earlier in the season, thus making the visitors the value call at an accumulator friendly 83/100 with Gamebookers.
Tottenham will be expecting a big performance from Robbie Keane who has been a driving force behind this season’s success at White Hart Lane, scoring some massive goals. The Irish striker, aiming to end a fantastic campaign on a high, is therefore worth a modest speculation at 9/2 with Bet365 to score first.
It will nevertheless be a nervy afternoon for Spurs and they might have to settle for a slender 1-0 victory (9/2, Pinnacle).
This of course, will render Arsenal’s result at home to Wigan irrelevant, although for their part they seem set to at least keep the pressure on their North London rivals throughout the afternoon by comfortably adding another three points to their tally.
The Gunners are 1/4 with Pinnacle to send the Latics home empty-handed but the bet of the game has to be VCBet's 1/2 for Arsene Wenger’s side to be ahead at both the interval and the final whistle given that they will fly out of the blocks in the hope that news of their early lead will filter through to East London and give Tottenham the jitters.
Elsewhere, Manchester United should cling on to second by seeing off Charlton at Old Trafford and even from a goal and 3/4 behind in the asian handicaps at 1.93 (bet365), the Red Devils should be backed with confidence. Liverpool will push them all the way though in the race to be runner-up, by spoiling the party down at Fratton Park and beating Portsmouth; an outcome chalked up by Gamebookers at 4/6.
In Scotland, it may not be the dream ending to the SPL campaign that the neutrals had hoped for but you won’t find Hearts fans complaining that the season is over, and their Champions League qualification secured, before they make the trip to Ibrox this afternoon. Rangers supporters will obviously be a little less thrilled by the climax to the season but their side will at least provide them with some final day cheer this afternoon.
After a long, hard season, the Jambos’ minds will be on their holidays or in Rudi Skacel’s case – a lucrative move to the Premiership and with the Gers keen to give Eck a decent send-off while at the same time impressing the watching Paul Le Guen, Bet Fred's 8/11 for the Light Blues to prevail is an absolute steal.
Furthermore, it’s quite possible that the challenge from Valdas Ivanauskas’ 7/2 shots (Canbet) will be so half-hearted that the hosts could overcome a one-goal handicap deficit and win by at least two; a result available at a mouth watering 11/5 with bet365.
Like Hearts, Celtic will also be in holiday mode, which is not the ideal frame of mind to be in when facing a stubborn Aberdeen outfit at Pittodrie. Jimmy Calderwood’s men have lost only three times on their own patch this term and while the Hoops midweek win at Kilmarnock is enough to shave some value off BetFred's 5/1 for a home win, Gamebookers quote, which is marginally higher than evens, for a Dons triumph or a stalemate is undoubtedly worth an interest.
In today’s other game, Kilmarnock entertain Hibs at Rugby Park and after the latter’s capitulation at Aberdeen last week, it’s tough not to lean towards Jim Jefferies charges. However, Killie’s form is a worry and a run of seven matches without a win significantly reduces the attractiveness of Bet365's 7/5 for a home win.
It therefore looks safer to take on board the fact that the pair have shared 13 goals in three fixtures this season and back a total of three or more today (3/4, Pinnacle), especially as it is set to be an entertaining and open encounter between two teams with nothing to play for.
