Players to Watch: Sergio Kun Aguero - FIFA World Cup 2006
Tuesday, 02 May 2006

Argentina are perennial favourites every time they step onto the field of an International match. The country has also produced its share of all-time greats and this year is no different. If you haven’t heard of Sergio 'Kun' Aguero, then start practicing his name - you will hear a lot from this 17-year-old kid, dubbed the ‘Pocket Rocket’.

Cries for his inclusion on this year’s edition of the World Cup squad are being echoed throughout the soccer world. Coach Jose Pekerman has a headache on his hands. With less than three weeks to name his official team, time is running out and he will have to answer the critics soon.

Aguero made his first division debut at just 15 years of age with the Red Devils. With three years gone by since ‘Kun’ debuted, (his nickname comes from a Japanese cartoon) many feel his talents are now needed on the World’s biggest stage next month in Germany. Expectations are high for this young stud, who’s been described by FIFA World Cup winning coach Cesar Luis Menotti as “having something of the Romario about him.” His explosive pace, short stride and flawless technique have many of Europe’s finest club’s seeking Aguero’s services.

The media, Diego Maradona and even current national team member Lionel Messi say with Aguero alongside, anything is possible. Argentina are head into the World Cup at 9/1 odds to capture the trophy. They trail powerhouse Brazil, England and Germany as fourth-favourites with most bookmakers.

With these expectations put onto a 17-year-old’s shoulders, you would think his humility would suffer. Not so with this talent, who happens to use his head for more than just scoring goals. Aguero believes things have come a bit too quickly, but loves the fact he gets to play football for a living and keeps that in the forefront. There are observers who believe his lack of senior experience may deter coach Pekerman from selecting him for Germany next month.

Aguero wasn’t even born 20 years ago when Maradona lifted the trophy for the country’s last World Cup title. Aguero would do anything to be in Germany, but only Pekerman can make that happen. It’s wait and see, but it won’t be long now. The walls are closing in on the team’s final roster nominations.
